TIPS FOR PARENTS TO NARROW GENERATION GAP

Generation Gap isn’t just a difference in ages of persons born in different time period, but actually a certain psychological and emotional gap between parents and children or elder and younger generations. Development of technology, changing lifestyle, modernization of thoughts is key reasons for generation gap. With more of western culture overcoming our moral values & ethics, this gap is widening; creating misunderstanding and lack of love in different generations. Technology and change is inevitable that creates new vision, methods and makes us move ahead in life leaving old techniques and concepts. New generation quickly adapts to technology, but older do not accept it easily as they want to stick to their old ways. There are many new technology and equipments that parents are not aware which their children uses. This gap is widen by both generations so it needs efforts from both the generations to fill these gaps.

Ways to Fill gaps:

1. KEEP YOUR SELF UPDATED:

Parenting has never been an easy job, and is even getting tougher in today’s generation. To cope up with widening generation gap parents need to keep them updated about new technology and trends. If your children ask you a doubt about recent things and if you are unable to give response, they might take you as outdated parents or man of gone generation. To keep pace with new generation’s thinking and attitude, one must keep trying and experimenting with new technology. This will help you have better interaction with you children and help them understand better.

2. SPENDING TIME TOGETHER:

Both parent and children have busy lives, so one must spare time from their busy schedule to spend time together. In evening, take time out to enquire about how was their day, discussing their studies, school events and any other emotional problems. Be their friends rather than rude parents that will help them speak their heart out frankly. Do not expect too much by pushing kids beyond their limit.

3. NEVER MAKE THEM FEEL ASHEMED OF YOU:

Is your child hesitant to go out with you or introducing to his/her friends? If he desires you to change your dressing or behave in more sophisticated way, then you must consider changing yourself but only on some genuine reasons.

4. TRY TO UNDERSTAND THEIR PERSPECTIVE:

Parents usually start comparing their time when they were young with their children’s present time. Earlier children demanded for bicycles when they matriculated, but now they need a bike, earlier parents gathered knowledge from books newspaper but now they prefer searching on internet or have news application in their phone. So with your children growing with ages, their attitude and thinking towards many things changes. You must also learn to understand their feelings, way of thinking.

5. LEARN TO ACCEPT:

When comparing your time with your children, there is considerable change in lifestyle, living habits, use of technology, likes and dislikes, so one must accept that you live in different world. One must be open minded to widen your horizons that will help you open doors of your heart to look at things from a new perspective.
